I thought that over the year I had found a lot of the poetry published for children. When the Nerdy Award Nominations were released I discovered a few that I hadn't read.
Here they are...
National Geographic Book of Animal Poetry: 200 Poems with Photographs that Squeak, Soar, and Roar by J. Patrick Lewis (compilation) -One of the things that I love about National Geographic is the incredible photos. And this compilation is no exception. Gorgeous photos of wildlife paired with some outstanding poetry. If you can only give one book of poetry to a teacher, I would suggest this one. The end notes and resources and poetry tips definitely move this to the top.
In the Sea by David Elliott and Holly Meade -This book of poetry that celebrates sea life would pair beautifully with Water Sings Blue (also on the Nerdy list) and compliment Song of the Water Boatman and Other Pond Poems. Both the illustrations and poems will win new fans.
Edgar Allan Poe's Pie: Math Puzzlers in Classic Poems by J. Patrick Lewis and Michael Slack - I am still amazed that there is a poetry book that blends poems/puzzlers and math. Definitely can't wait to share this one with my teacher friends.
Poem Runs: Baseball Poems by Douglas Florian- I am quickly becoming a fan of Florian. I loved UnBEElievables: Honeybee Poems and Paintings which also made the Nerdy list this year. This fun and creative book of poetry celebrates baseball. Another must add to the list of poetry books for the classroom.
So what poetry books on the Nerdy list did you love the best?

Nerdy Book Club Guest Post
Today I have a special guest post on the Nerdy Book Club Blog where I share a list my top 10 Early Readers. However, have you ever tried to limit yourself to just 10 titles for 1st to 3rd graders? It wasn't easy. As a result, I am posting 10 more titles here. For those of you working with 1st to 3rd Graders, here are 10 more book choices that are sure to be hits with your kiddos.
Marty McGuire by Kate Messner - Move over Clementine, Judy, and Ramona - there is a new 3rd grader in town and her name is Marty. I love Messner's early Middle Grade series. Marty McGuire Digs Worms comes out on April 1st.
Bink and Gollie by Kate DiCamillo and Alison McGhee - I love Bink & Gollie and book two will be here in time for the summer. Yay!
Babymouse by Jennifer L. Holm and Matthew Holm - I have 1st graders all the way up to 5th graders reading this series. Who doesn't love Babymouse? She rocks!
Lulu and the Brontosaurus by Judith Viorst; Illustrated by Lane Smith - There is only one book with Lulu but it sure is a good one. I love all of the alternate ending choices.
Araminta Spookie by Angie Sage - Araminta lives in a big house, a castle of sorts along with her aunt and uncle, and a ghost, and quite a few more unusual things. Just the right spookie fun for an early chapter book series.
Dinkin’ Dings by Guy Bass; Illustrated by Pete Williamson - Dinkin' is afraid of...well pretty much everything. But it doesn't stop Dinkin' and the Frightening Things from having to save their neighborhood on a regular basis. Lots of laughs with some scary things too.
Roscoe Riley by Katherine Applegate; Illustrated by Brian Biggs - Roscoe is one of my favorite first graders.
Zac Power by H.I. Larry - For kids who enjoy things like Spy Kids, Zac Power is the perfect read. Lots of adventure and cool gadgets can be found in these stories.
Down Girl and Sit by Lucy Nolan; Illustrated by Mike Reed - The world from the perspective of dogs. Pretty humorous.
Gabby and Gator by James Burks - This would be cool as a series but I am happy for at least one story of Gabby and Gator. This is another one that appeals from 1st to 5th grade.
Happy Reading...and be sure to stop by the Nerdy Book Club.
Bink and Gollie by Kate DiCamillo and Alison McGhee - I love Bink & Gollie and book two will be here in time for the summer. Yay!

My Twitter buddies and fellow educators - Donalyn Miller and Colby Sharp started a new blog recently called the Nerdy Book Club Blog. Other educators, librarians, and book people have been contributing guest posts. They have been a lot of fun to read. Recently, they even held the Nerdy Book Club Awards.
But they didn't stop there. They also started a Café Press store. There is lots of cool stuff in the Nerdy Book Club Store and what is wonderful is that the proceeds from the store go to RIF (Reading Is Fundamental). For my Mid-Winter's Eve Giveaway, one lucky participant has a chance to win up to $20 in Nerdy Book Club merchandise from the Café Press Store. Here is a sample of one of the items over at the Nerdy Book Club Store:
Wouldn't this be a great mug to sip your favorite beverage while reading from your TBR pile or checking out the blog posts written by various Nerdy Book Club Members over on the Nerdy Book Club Blog?
